The Best Sunscreens of 2017, Beach & Sport > Waxhead Sun Defense Sunscreen Stick, SPF 30″
“Florida-based Waxhead makes energy bars, sunscreens, and clothing to protect your skin. The company’s energy bars—almost a food group in itself these days for hunters, fishers and other outdoor people—are said to contain antioxidants, electrolytes and nutrients that help “remove free radicals, produced by sun exposure and exercise.” They are made in the US and contain no gluten, artificial preservatives, colors, sweeteners, flavors, high fructose corn syrup or trans fats. They taste good, with a crisp texture—not the cloying, goopy consistency of some bars—and come in appealing flavors such as Apricot Cranberry and Cherry Almond.” Read more here.
“Think your sunscreen is safe? Probably not. Nearly 70% of the more than 1,480 products tested in the Environmental Working Group’s “2017 Sunscreen Guide” were found unsafe, ineffective or both. As scary as those numbers seem, the good news is that dozens of approved products made the list. We’ve sifted through EWG’s top picks to help make it easier to find the one that’s right for your needs.
BEST TINTED SUNSCREEN
Waxhead Sun Defense Tinted Zinc Oxide Sunscreen, SPF 31, is a mineral-based sunscreen that blends with most skin tones and has a sheer to light tint. You can use it as a make-up primer or a stand-alone face sunscreen. Based on EWG’s data, this sunscreen provides excellent UVA protection and a good balance of UVA protection in relation to the SPF. EWG RATING: 1, lowest hazard.” Read entire post here.
“If you want to get even more all-natural than that, Waxhead’s broad-spectrum SPF 30 sun sticks are made of only four ingredients—zinc oxide, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic beeswax, and organic cocoa powder—and likewise offer water and sweat resistance for 80 minutes.” Read entire article here.
“Sunscreen shopping can be, in a word, overwhelming. The options are endless, the prices often vary wildly, and it can be tough to keep up with all of the various concerns about a product that is supposed to protect (as opposed to harm!) you. Thankfully, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) comes out with an annual guide to sunscreens, in which it breaks down the latest trends and red flags to hit shelves.
Best: Waxhead Sun Defense Zinc Oxide Vitamin D Enhanced Sunscreen, SPF 35
Excellent UVA protection combined with ingredients that pose low health concerns are two main pluses for this zinc oxide-based sunscreen.” More here.
“The temperatures are rising, vacations are scheduled, and the beaches are calling your name, so with summer just around the corner, it’s time to stock up on all beach-ready gear to get you and your family set for a safe season. “According to the nonprofit, nonpartisan Environmental Working Group (EWG), many chemicals absorbed through sunscreen can actually be measured in blood, breast milk and urine samples. What about that tropical, beachy scent? You’re inhaling chemicals. But before you throw out all of those bottles of coconut-scented creams and tubes of gooey lip balm, think twice. A certain amount of sun provides valuable Vitamin D, after all. And spending time outdoors affords a host of benefits. Just educate yourself about sunscreen ingredients so you know which ones to trust.”

“Here’s what you need to do to keep yourself healthy: Apply sunscreen – every TWO HOURS – and 30 MINUTES before heading outside. Water ERASES sunscreen, so you need to consider a wet-suit, reapplication or shade. Use a sunscreen SAFE for you and the planet – these brands work awesome, and Waxhead (our find). Wear hats, sunglasses, or even sun sleeves – even on CLOUDY days. Eat FOODS rich in sunscreen protection – it comes from the inside first.” Read entire post here.
“When those UV rays penetrate deep into your skin, the result is sunburn. Ouch! But at the same time when UV radiation contacts skin, it reacts with oxygen, which causes a free radical chain reaction. Free radicals are distorted atoms which now carry an odd (unpaired) number of electrons looking to even up. They do this by attacking other cells. Once formed, look out, chain reaction. And… what does that mean? Best description we’ve seen comes from the Waxhead website: “Ever seen an apple turn brown when exposed to oxygen-filled air? Free radical oxidation affects our skin in a significantly similar way.” Yuk.” Read entire post here.
“We will be fishing the waters of La Paz, Baja California Sur, and mainly fishing the beaches along the Sea of Cortez. We will be staying at Gran Sueño which covers about 30 acres, and is located in a relatively remote oasis on the Sea of Cortez also known as the “Bay of Dreams.
The weather will be in the mid 80’s. Staying protected from the sun will be a priority on and off the water! We will have with us our favorite Costa Sunglasses, a full line of products from Buff USA and Waxhead Sun Defense. An array of Waxhead products to protect us while we are down there.” Read entire post here.
“The number one thing we always do is make sure we are protecting our daughters skin from the sun (and ours too!). It is important to us to use products that are safe for our family, That are free from scary toxins and that really get the job done! When I found Waxhead products I was THRILLED.
“Not only are their products chemical free and environmentally friendly, they actually WORK. AND they are a local Amelia Island based company. LOVE. They are zinc sunscreens and they really protect our skin from the sun. There is nothing I hate more than seeing my babies little faces sunburnt. With Waxhead they are protected all day. With little to no reapplication! Very water resistant! They also offer energy bars and lots of other sun thriving goodies! My girls loved the bars that taste like “PB & J” they said!” Read entire post here.
“Let me set the stage for this testing. Nick Gebhart, OTFM Technical Director and I had just finished a successful duck hunt. We were a bit chilled and very hungry. We cut up the Almond Butter Dark Chocolate Banana to sample first. Delicious! The banana provides a subtle background for the almond butter and crunchy why crisps, with hints of fruit. Next, we dove into the Peanut Butter Apricot Cranberry bar. The peanut butter taste is layered with the fruitiness of Apricot and Cranberry. Again, a tasty snack. Finally, we sampled the Peanut Butter Cherry Almond bar. As with the previous bar, the fruit flavors are built upon the peanut better, though distinct cherry and almond flavors round our the taste experience.
Both Nick Gebhart and I give a resounding two thumbs up on all three energy bars. We unanimously agreed that the Almond Butter Dark Chocolate Banana energy bar, paired nicely and best with the Blanton’s Bourbon … just sayin’.” Read entire review here.
“Summer — don’t you just love this time of year? It’s time to enjoy the Florida outdoors even more. It is also the time of year to think about protecting your skin. I have heard all the excuses like, “I don’t have the time, and it takes too long.” In reality, it only takes a few moments to apply sun protection, and all you need is a bottle of sunscreen and a shot glass (chances are good you have one). This is the perfect size and dose recommended by plastic surgeons and dermatologists alike.
If you are too lazy to do that, well then maybe it is time to try an easy-to-apply awesome stick. There are some new products that are perfect for the season. One is a coconut oil (which is all the rage) and an organic sunscreen with zinc oxide by local company Waxhead. This sunblock is free of all harmful petrochemicals and completely safe for babies and marine life.” Read entire article here.
“This week I sampled Waxhead Sun Defense and found so many things I loved! Saying different is good rings true for Waxhead. It is not just a line of sunscreen. They believe in sun defense from the inside out. Located in Amelia Island, this small business offers nutritional bars (packed with sun-protecting nutrients to up your body’s natural defenses), hats, neck shields, sun shirts and organic sunscreens. If its sun protection you need, they’ve got it!” Read entire post here.
“While the best sun protection is to avoid peak hours (10 am to 2 pm in most areas) or stay under shade trees, a tent, or wear protective clothing… there are times you and your family will need to use sunscreen. Both sunscreen use and skin cancer rates have increased in the past two decades. It’s not a coincidence. Conventional sunscreens are loaded with harmful chemicals, some even known to cause cancer – the very thing you’re trying to prevent! Here’s a round up of our top picks in sunscreen. These formulas passed the EWG database, and equally as important, they’ve passed the Green Child team test.” Click here to see their Safe Sunscreen Guide.
“Your skin is the largest organ in your body. What you put on your skin absorbs into your bloodstream and from there goes into your liver, your kidneys, everything. Get rid of the toxins and stop putting chemicals on your skin. There are plenty of organic, all natural products to use for skin care. Many of them are found in your kitchen. Protect your skin from sun damage by wearing a hat, long sleeve shirts made from fabric that wicks moisture or breathes (how about good old fashioned cotton?)
For sunscreen, there are plenty of chemical free options. My favorite is Waxhead.” Read entire article here.
“Waxhead’s first role for me is the fact that they are a tasty and nutritious snack … Now that I’m fueled up with their antioxidant rich bars, the real magic comes into play. These bars are revolutionary in the fact that they are the world’s only functional sun defense food! These bars have been created with special foods in mind that work inside your body to provide “sunscreen” from the inside. The more you eat them, the more your body can fight off sunburn and reduce inflammation. For someone like me who is constantly outside in the direct sunlight, this has truly been a lifesaver and a standard in my diet.” Read entire article here.
“How can a snack bar offer sun protection?” I asked myself. Essentially what it comes down to is the bars are packed with antioxidants. When you ingest the antioxidants on a regular basis, your own sun self defense is activated. I was curious, so I accepted their offer to give it a try. They sent me enough bars to have one a day for 2 weeks. They say it takes a week to kick in, but I’ve been averaging twice a month to go fishing since I got my current job, so 2 weeks was perfect. For a baseline, I went out and didn’t wear any sun protection – no mask, no sunscreen. By the time the trip was over and I had gone home, I was feeling pretty crispy. Then I ate the bars, and went out again. This time, not so much. Turns out I wasn’t the only one to field test the product. Overall the results were similar. I understand that the field testing wasn’t exactly a clinical trial, but my personal experience has me believing there is a positive effect to the bars.” Read the whole article here.
“Of course there are some who believe we are what we eat…and after all aren’t we? For those purists who don’t want to mess with treatments, needling or concocting there are Waxhead Sun Defense Nutrient Bars. They are clean nutrient bars (loaded with a proprietary mix of antioxidants) that help protect your skin in the sun and repair skin damage.” Read more here.

YAY! … I’ve only eaten the dark chocolate banana Waxhead energy bar so far, but let me tell you — it was ah-mazing! I can’t remember the last time I had such a great nutrient bar and then to read that it is rich in antioxidants helping to defend my skin in the sun! I had never hear of that before.” Read more here.
