Waxhead Green Practices and Conservation Initiatives
We are thoughtfully committed to green practices, health + the environment.
Waxhead makes eco-friendly sun defense products with all-natural, non-toxic ingredients. We do this for two reasons: to give our customers a better life in the sun, and to help make our world a better place to be.
To minimize our company’s overall carbon footprint, we strive to combine the best existing methods and the latest modern techniques. We evaluate and adjust our processes in choosing and sourcing ingredients, and producing, packaging and distributing our products.
Here are a few initiatives along our journey to create and sustain industry-best green practices.
Kindness + Respect
Our intent is to grow thoughtfully by building conscientious relationships beneficial to all our stakeholders. We treat our partners, employees and customers with kindness, respect and dignity. We appreciate them as fellow human beings, with personal lives and commitments and we surround ourselves with people we want to see be successful in the right way.
Every day, we act on the belief that a rising tide raises all boats.
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
We seek to keep our packaging to a minimum. To lessen waste, we reuse many of the shipping boxes and packaging materials we receive to ship products to both our customers, retailers and distributors. If it looks like your shipping box has been used before, it most probably was. We also recycle cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, ink cartridges, bottles and cans.
Our sunscreen sticks, tubes and lip balm tubes are recyclable (plastic Recycle Code: 4 Low-Density Polyethylene), and we don’t use single-product boxes to market them. We are constantly searching for improved green and reduced packing solutions. For example, we are currently researching how compostable or biodegradable wrappers for our energy bars can fit profitably within our business model.
Recycled, Fair-trade Apparel
Our line of sun apparel is made from 100% recycled post-consumer content. One of our long sleeve Waxhead sun shirts keeps 8 plastic bottles out of our landfills and oceans. No dyes or chemicals in our fabric means 55% less water consumption in the manufacturing process.
In fact, our green process results in 66% reduction in energy consumption and 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Our partners in Haiti and Guatemala are co-ops that create jobs and full-living wages for their workers.
Reduce Plastic Usage
We’re on a mission to reduce the amount of plastic we use as a company (and as a family). We’ve partnered with TIPA to bring fully compostable bags to contain our 100% recycled shirts.
We drink from reusable water bottles, we bring our own grocery bags to the store and buy in bulk. All of our plastic sunscreen tubes and sticks are recyclable, and we are researching new containers that contain 25% post consumer recycled plastic.
UPDATE: Our sunscreen sticks will soon be available in cardboard tubes that are fully compostable and recyclable.
Reef Safe Sunscreens
It breaks our heart every time we read a story about the destruction of the coral reefs. Every year, 14,000 tons of sunscreen washes off swimmers and snorkelers into reef areas. Most of them contain chemicals that can bleach and seriously damage the marine environments.
All Waxhead sunscreens are safe for marine systems, reefs and fish. Our skincare products are biodegradable and contain none of the petrochemicals known to have feminizing effects on fish, coral toxicity or bioaccumulation issues.
Protecting our Coasts
Waxhead is passionate about sustaining our coasts and oceans, and we donate a portion of our profits to the Coastal Conservation Association, whose purpose is to conserve, promote, and enhance the present and future availability of coastal and marine resources for ongoing benefit and enjoyment.
CCA builds artificial reefs, creates finish hatcheries, and defends net bans, acting on a long term respect for what our waters mean for generations to come.
Certified Mineral + Organic Ingredients
We only use high-quality certified mineral and organic ingredients in our sunscreens. We do not use any toxic chemicals, fragrances, synthetics or dyes. Our energy bars contain certified organic fruit and nuts, and we’re researching new energy bar manufacturers to support all of our food ingredients to be completely non-GMO compliant.
Animal Safe Products
All Waxhead skin care products are certified Leaping Bunny safe (absolutely no animal testing). Everything’s been rigorously certified by the FDA, and we only test our products on ourselves.
Sustainable Fishing Practices
You won’t see us handle fish by the gills or hang them upside down, in real life or on social media.
We practice and teach our boys (and our audience) how to handle fish properly: unhook, hold horizontally for a quick pic, then gently guide and hold back into the water, allowing gills to reactivate fully, before releasing.
Educate + Inspire Others
It’s important to us to educate our tribe on conservation efforts and inspire them to take steps of significance in their homes, and in their waters, beaches and boats. We don’t judge, we simply share information, because we learned it and want to share it.
For example, we share safely handled fishing pictures, articles on clever ways to reuse plastic bottles, and the importance of choosing reef safe sunscreen. We can all make as many small differences as we want, every day.
Now Or Neverglades Day
In April 2017, we traveled to Tallahassee, Florida for the Now Or Neverglades Sportfishing Day. Our trip included a visit to the Capital in support of House Bill 761 and State Bill 10. We wrote letters to our State Senators and House of Representatives to support the project, which will build water reservoirs on the south side of Lake Okeechobee that would filter the water and send clean water south through the Everglades.
As native Floridians, this project is near to our hears.
Waxhead has organized beach cleanups in North Florida, gathering other small businesses as sponsors to help cover more beach access after holiday weekends.
Every time we go to the beach, we take our big white bucket and fill it up with beach trash. When we see someone litter, we don’t judge – we simply pick it up.
Future Products + Projects
We work on new eco-friendly products and adjustments to our evolving product line all the time. We’re researching how to implement compostable or biodegradable packaging for our energy bar wrappers. We are researching ways to streamline our shipping and operational activities to reduce carbon waste.
Soon, we are switching to cardboard containers for our sunscreen sticks. We have plans to launch reusable stainless steel bottles. Join us on our journey as we continue to build new green practices, and if you have an idea, don’t hesitate to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
